CAUSE: The potato, or the S. tuberosum, is a tuberous crop that consists of mainly starch and water. This particular crop originated in the Andes, a large mountain range that is situated South America. The inhabitants of this wide diverse terrain, the Andeans, were the first persons to domesticate and widely cultivate the potato. The Andeans cultivated an extensive variety of potatoes, due to the difference in species that relied on several components; such as elevation and soil type. When the Spaniards began their colonization of the Americas in the sixteenth century, they discovered the Andeans’ usage of potatoes and advanced farming techniques. The Spaniards transported these techniques and potato to Europe through the Columbian Exchange. After the potato was diffused into Europe, it yielded effects that would influence Europe for centuries to come. The introduction of the potato (cause) was one of the most influential events in European history. This crop has numerous beneficial factors. Greek Myth Book Report: Prometheus Steals Fire From Heaven Essay I. Setting: The setting for the story Prometheus Steals Fire From Heaven is In heaven, Earth, Olympus, and Mt. Caucasus. The time period is that of when there were only the (Greek) gods, and no men on earth, and none of the animals seemed worthy to rule the rest. II. Point of View: Omniscient point of view III. Characters: Zeus Zeus is the ruler of the universe. At one point in the story Zeus was Jealous of others powers. Zeus also had a bad temper and was mad at Prometheus for stealing heavens fire and chained Prometheus high on Mt. Caucasus, forever. He is one of 2 antagonists in the story. Hera Queen of heaven, no significant part in story. Prometheus The major protagonist in the story. Prometheus was one of the Titans (parents of the gods). He always thought of the positive side of things, and never let anyone or thing phase him. He proudly endured pain and showed his agony to none, all for inferior humans. Epimetheus A minor part in the story. Epimetheus was the brother of Prometheus. Hephaestus This minor character is heavens lame smith. His part is somewhat significant later in the story, but he has no say in what he does, even if it is wrong. Pandora Pandora was made by Zeus. She was made to curb mans power. As beautiful as a goddess, the immortals bestowed gifts on her to make her more captivating. Pandora is the 2nd antagonist in the story. IV. Theme The heros mission is to create a man like figure on the Earth, with the power of fire. Pandora accidentally opened a jar full of disease, envy, revenge, spite, and other evils which went on man, down on the earth, but she closed it. The only thing left in it was hope. That is all man had now hope. Prometheus completed his mission, even though he was chained up on the side of the mountain nd tormented the rest of his life. V. Plot There was a time when there was no gods, and Heaven and Earth alone existed. From their union sprung the Titans, and the children of the Titans, the gods rebelled and overthrew them. Now there was no men on Earth so Prometheus had a task of making one. He mixed clay with water, kneaded it, shaped it, and made it look rather god like in shape. He made it stand upright so man could look up at the stars, as opposed to down on the Earth, like the animals. Now Prometheus had to give man gifts to make him superior to all the animals. Unfortunately, his brother Epimetheus already had given all the great gifts to the animals, and there was nothing left for man. Then Prometheus thought of a great idea, that would enable man to make weapons, tools, master the arts, protect them from nature, and slay beasts, among other things. So Prometheus lit his torch at the chariot of the sun, and went back down to Earth. Zeus was mad because the human was a great match for the animals on earth, and perhaps even for the gods, so he made woman, lovely as a goddess. All the gods gave her gifts to make her even better. She was named Pandora Gift of All. Epimetheus was enchanted with Pandora so he took her into his home, where he had a jar with certain gifts that he had never given out to animals, and e warned her to stay far away from that jar. She thought it would do no harm if she just peeked in to see what was there, but as soon as she did, out came a host of evil plagues, and all manner of disease, envy, spite, revenge, and they spread out far and wide. Analysis of the Hero Prometheus was a very determined person. I believe this because he went hrough the trouble of stealing the fire from heaven, just for some animals (humans). I also think that Prometheus was clever. It even said in the book Quick-witted Prometheus but that is not the whole reason. He is clever because even after his brother had given all of the gifts he could think of to the other animals, Prometheus thought of fire to give to the humans. Prometheus was proud of what he did, because at the end of the story he did not regret what had happened, even though he was chained up at the top of the mountain to be tortured. Prometheus is also very kind. He warned his brother about the evil Pandora, but his brother didnt listen, and the consequences were not good at all. One negative trait of Prometheus is that he didnt realize what the consequences would be from stealing the fire from heaven. He just took it, and went away rejoicing. I cant think of a name for this trait, maybe half-witted, eventhough he was very intelligent. VII. Conflicts Person vs. Person: Zeus was Jealous of Prometheus and his power to create man, and to steal the fire from heaven. He ultimately avenged this crime by having Prometheus chained to the top of Mt. Caucasus to be tortured for a long time. The conflict here would be Zeus vs. Prometheus. Person vs. Society: Prometheus stole fire from heaven and the gods didnt like that one bit. They were perhaps a society and they disagreed with Prometheus when he did what he did. The conflict is Prometheus vs. The Gods Person vs. Nature: The humans that Prometheus was creating had no special talents because the gifts were all given to the other animals, for example: Wings, Claws, Scales, etc. How were the humans supposed to be superior to the rest of creation when nature was greater? That is the Person vs. Nature Man vs. the other animals. VIII. Literary Value. There are many things a person can gain from reading a myth. The values, morals, and the theme can effect a person and they can use the story (or myth) as an example to be a better person or to think about what they do, before they consider the consequences. I can gain knowledge from reading a myth such as this, for example the word hope. This is explained a great deal in the story and I have a better understanding of it. I also can look at what Prometheus did and think about what I do before I do it so that in the end, I dont get hurt (or screwed).

In the short story â€Å"Harrison Bergeron†, the residents of the city have no choice but to have their individual abilities handicapped. When it comes to The Incredibles, the protagonists are not allowed to use their special abilities to save citizens within the city. Although the abilities these characters have are natural, they are prevented from using them in the community and they are told to keep their powers to themselves. An example in â€Å"Harrison Bergeron† is when people who are above average considering knowledge, are to use an ear radio which blasts unusual sounds which prevents the individual from thinking in depth. This is used so that no one has more knowledge and understanding than another individual in the community. A similar situation appeared in the movie The Incredibles, where Dash was not allowed to participate in any kind of sport related activity because he had an ability which allows him to run real fast which would give away their family secret of them being superheroes. In both stories their individual characteristics were taken away from them making no one unique and to show equality. When comparing both stories the only difference is that in â€Å"Harrison Bergeron† their talents were handicapped so everyone could be equal, and in The Incredibles the superheroes were to hide their special powers to protect their real identity and keep their family safe. Talents that people have are not there to be kept for themselves but to be shared with the rest of the world and take on new challenges.

Analysis and Interpretation of “Company of Wolves”

Angela Carter: â€Å"The Company of Wolves† (1979, excerpt) Men are powerful, strong, dominant. But what are women's strengths? This question was widely discussed in the late seventies during the women's liberation movement. Women all over the world were fighting for their rights, and this inspired female authors to put their thoughts into stories. Women could be manipulative, deceiving. They could control men when they wanted to. So why were the men in control of the world?By rewriting â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood†, Angela Carter turns the norms of the fairytale upside down, and thereby shows the development in contemporary society. In â€Å"The Company of Wolves†, a young girl beats the most manly of all creatures: the werewolf. The short story is chronological and is told by an omniscient third person narrator with a clear narrative voice:†Children do not stay young for long in this savage country†(p. 22). This gives the reader an insight in the hu ntsman's thoughts as well as the girls, and we get an understanding of the decisions taken by the characters.The short story has intertextuality, as it's a rewriting of the fairytale â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood†, but it's uncharacteristic as a fairytale as it does not start with the usual â€Å"once upon a time†, and does not end with â€Å"they lived happily ever after†. Angela Carter has chosen to rewrite a story almost everyone knows to make her message easier to understand. But the language in the story is quite formal. This makes it more difficult to understand properly, and it shows that Angela Carter wanted to address the story to the educated part of society.The formal language is also a way of pointing out that women can actually write in a high level of language. The short story's setting is midwinter in a forest. The winter embodies the color white, the color of innocence. The color white is used frequently in the story as well as the color red to pe rsonalize the girl. The white color symbolizes her innocence and the red color represents a grown woman, her lethality and female passion in contrast to her innocence and sensibility. The girl is the main character in the story, as she undergoes a clear development from a young girl to a grown woman.She starts out as a young and innocent girl, casually walking through the forest on her way to her grandmother's house. But as she meets the young huntsman, the man, the wolf, it starts snowing. The huntsman threatens her innocence symbolized with the prelude to a blizzard. At the end of the story, just as the girl has gone to bed with the huntsman, it stops snowing (â€Å"The blizzard died down†, p. 27). The white snow, her innocence, has died down, and her innocence is lost forever. Angela Carter is using a woman as the hero in the story, which is quite unusual for a fairytale.She was trying to break away from the norms of the fairytale by letting the girl use her female strengt hs to beat the werewolf. She is deceiving and manipulating the werewolf, and ends up sleeping with the werewolf instead of being eaten. The huntsman is Angela Carter's symbol of masculinity. In this story men are shown as beasts, just like the huntsman. He's a werewolf, he's hairy, he's â€Å"carnivore incarnate† (p. 25). When the girl was walking through the forest, â€Å"†¦ she heard the freezing howl of a wolf† (p. 23), (â€Å"†¦ but she saw no sign of a wolf at all, nor of a naked man†, p. 23).By adding this, Angela Carter implies that a naked man and a wolf are the same thing, (and thereby she lets her thoughts as the writer be apparent). The huntsman eats the grandmother. He is literally feeding on women, just as Angela Carter indicates that men are feeding on women in society. Most of the women at that time were still cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children at home singlehandedly, and could proceed to take care of their husband when he got back from work. Women were the unappreciated pillar of society. The colors red and white are the main symbols in the story.These colors are mentioned throughout the story (â€Å"†¦ her cheeks are an emblematic scarlet and white†, p. 22). The first sentence starts with â€Å"It is midwinter and the robin†¦ † (p. 22), the midwinter is white and the robin is red. As mentioned earlier, red and white symbolizes the girl's innocence, passion and femininity. Red is not only used to symbolize the huntsman's lethality (â€Å"†¦ eyes the size of saucers, saucers full of Greek fire, diabolic phosphorescence†, p. 25), (â€Å"There was a faint trace of blood on his chin†, p. 24), the girl's red dress shows how the girl is equally lethal to the huntsman.By writing this story Angela Carter is focusing on women's strengths, such as how the girl uses manipulation and deception to beat the werewolf. She indicates that a woman can take a man into her mer cy in any given situation (even when he's about to eat you). But does Angela Carter really think manipulation and deception are strengths? Isn't this to display women's weakness, if these are their only strengths? Angela Carter uses the fairytale to catch the reader's attention, and by making the girl succeed in manipulating with the werewolf, she dissociates herself from the classic fairytales in which a man is the savior.Angela Carter shows men as beasts, merely feeding off of and toying with women, though they can't go for long without the love of a woman. Men are unintelligent as they just follow their feral instincts, and can be tricked by even the most innocent girl at any given time. But Angela Carter does not end up giving the reader a positive interpretation of women either. They use manipulation and their female bodies to deceive men. Psychosocial Development Psychosocial development is an integration of the principles of personal, psychological and cultural or social development. The psychosocial view of problems focuses on the idea that problems are rooted in relationship issues. Heinz Kohut said humans have narcissistic needs that are satisfied by other people, represented as self-objects. If the child receives enough mirroring (positive attention) from self-objects (chiefly the mother), the sense of self develops appropriately and affects their social life.If there's too much mirroring, the child won't be able to deal with frustrations. If there's too little, the development of the self is stunted. In the movie â€Å"The Blind Side† Before meeting Tuohys, Michael was reserved and had very few friends. It is apparent that he did not receive sufficient mirroring from his parents while growing up which resulted in his ‘psychosocial dysfunction’. At school he was ridiculed because they thought he was dumb in the sense that he did not speak to anyone and he wasn’t cognitively smart.As he gradually bonded with Sean Junior he ‘came out of his shell’ and began expressing himself and communicating with others even more effectively than before. For example when he saw the children at the park playing and he went towards them, his approach scared them away, but after he was told to smile and present a warm approach to the children to let them know that he is friendly the children were willing to allow Big Mike to play with them. This improved his social abilities to a great extent. Michael was introduced to a different milieu, he not only learnt from the new family that adopted him but he also taught them something.This is seen when Michael stayed over for Thanksgiving and while everyone else was watching television and eating their meal in the living room he was seated around the table. When Mrs Tuohy saw him around the table she demanded that the entire fam ily sit around the table. This goes to show that this was a social grace or something customary to Michael that was not a part of the Tuohy’s socialization. One other theorist, Karen Horney suggested that Psychoanalytic Social Theory is built on the assumption that social and cultural conditions, especially childhood experiences, are largely responsible for shaping personality.People who do not have their needs for love and affection satisfied during childhood develop basic hostility toward their parents and others and, as a consequence, suffer from basic anxiety. In addition, watching the movie â€Å"The Blind Side†, I have observed the main character Michael as being socially handicapped as a result of his family background and experiences. Michael’s hostility was that of silence as it can be assumed that his need for love and affection was not satisfied during his childhood due to his parents’ absence.His father was not involved in his life at all but his mother was there for him or she wanted to be there for him but because of her drug addiction it disabled her ability to supply his needs as a child. According to Albert Bandura most human learning is observational learning, not conditioning and occurs by observing what others do and imitating what one sees. One need not actually perform the behaviour oneself. Taking for example in the movie where Michael was not cognitively intelligent in other subject areas but he was tested 98% in protective instincts.This might have been because of his past experience as a child and growing up he had to fend for himself, not because he saw persons fending for themselves but because he was left with no other option. This especially was due to the fact that he was a ward of the state and was placed in foster care but did not want to stay. His protective instinct could also have been adapted from observing how the gangsters from his community would defend themselves in gang fights , hustling in the streets etc. Therefore, his strong area of social development was in protecting himself/ his blind side.Another instance in which Big Mike’s psychosocial development was evident was in the connection between the time Mrs Tuohy saw him walking in the cold and asked him if he had somewhere to stay. Because of his hesitation she said â€Å"don’t you dear lie to me. † He ended up developing meaning from this dialogue and learnt that lying is wrong. In the ending after being questioned by Mrs Granger, out of rage and anger he repeated the same phrase to Mrs Tuohy (â€Å"don’t you dear lie to me†) when he tried to find out from her whether or not she was forcing Big Mike to go to the college of Mississippi.

This documentary uses the rhetorical form of film making as its main purpose is to persuade the viewer to agree with Moores point of view. Regardless, of ones political view, this film is not likely to leave the audience indifferent to the opinions portrayed in the movie. Fahrenheit 9/11 is a powerful movie that effectively gets Moores message across but what is it that make the film efficacious? There are several aspects of the film that should be considered in terms of its effectiveness. One is that the movie uses the rhetorical form which means the entire focus of the film is to convince the audience of something and it contains some powerful arguments. This film uses three types of arguments: from source, subject centered, viewer-centered arguments. Each one of these elements contributed to making this film and its message more compelling and credible and each one of these elements will be discussed in further detail after a brief summary of the movie is given. As previously mentioned, Fahrenheit 9/11 is Moore’s attempt to link the Bush administration to the tragic events of 9/11. Moore spends the first part of movie giving evidence of this connection, using documents, interviews, and news footage. Supposedly, there is major deceit and gross negligence on behalf of the current president that caused the terrorist attacks. With this premise, Moore narrates a convincing story. From here, Fahrenheit 9/11 explores the results of September 11, 2001 from the Patriot Act to airport security to the war in Iraq. The end of the movie ties both these aspects together by appealing to the viewer’s emotion with scenes of the poor, soldiers, and their families. The purpose of the film is to convince its audience of the Bush administration’s wrongdoing so this type of documentary is considered to be rhetorical. If the viewer is a republican, Moore tires to expose the Bush administrations lies and persuade them to believe what he feels are the true values of that party, money. If the viewer is a democrat, then it seems Moore is trying to convince them of how important it is to remove the current administration. This is, of course, Moore’s opinion which is a characteristic of the rhetorical documentary. However, it does make use of evidence to help prove his point even if at times this proof is bias and, perhaps, purposely misleading. The last aspect of rhetorical documentaries, appealing to the audiences emotions, is perhaps the films most powerful element because it forces the viewer to see and think about things they may not normally have to, say, watching the news. Even if one does not agree with Moores politics, they are bou nd to be touched by the stories heard and images seen in the movie. This use of emotion is a device Moore uses to present his arguments more profoundly. One such argument is viewer-centered, which simply means that the filmmaker is using emotional footage to help persuade the audience of a particular opinion. Moore shows images that do not play too often on American television. He personalizes the war in Iraq by showing the atrocities that are happening there everyday. We do hear about the U.S. soldiers that have died there but rarely are the injured ones mentioned. In the film, you get to hear their point of view on the war and about their point of view about their various injuries, from nerve damage to lost limbs. Fahrenheit 9/11 also shows the suffering of the Iraqi people themselves. He interviewed Iraqis talking about how men carry around their dead wives in their arms and showed pictures of Iraqi women with severe face and head injuries due to the misuse of napalm. It showed dead Iraqis being piled into the back of a truck, a scene not at all dissimilar or unlike some depicting the Holocaust. Moore also interviews and follows a mother whose son was killed in war, showing her crying and getting into an argument with someone who was pro-war. In all these instances, Moore wants the audience to feel deep sympathy for all the people who have been effected negatively by the war, a war started by the Bush administration. This aforementioned war moves directly into another argument for rhetorical documentaries, subject-centered arguments, meaning an argument related to the films main subject. The main argument in Fahrenheit 9/11 is that the war in Iraq was started so Bush and is political friends could get richer and cover up their own connections to 9/11 and the Bin Laden family. Moore presents this arguments in several ways. According to Moore, instead of trying to find weapons of mass destruction or protecting the Iraqi people by removing Saddam Hussein, the war was started because of how much money Bush and his associates stood to make from it. As the narrator, Moore entered President Bushs thoughts after he found out about 9/11 and asked the question â€Å"which one of them screwed me†. With this statement, Moore setting up the next few possible scenarios of who was behind the 9/11 attacks. According to Moore, when Bush determines that it is Bin Laden that was the culprit, he chose to bla me Saddam Hussein by making false accusations about him having weapons of mass destruction and a connection to Al Qaida, Bin Ladens terrorist group. Bush needed to blame Saddam Hussein because he did not want people learning about his financial and personal connections with the Bin Laden family. Saddam, it seems, was a good scapegoat because while fighting a war on Terror in Iraq, Bush and his associates could make millions of dollars for their various companies,like Unocal and Haliburton, in the process. His attempt to prove this was by providing footage of several corporations having a meeting discussing how much money they could make from the war in Iraq. The film showed scenes of both Bush Jr. and Sr. cavorting with Saudis who had invested in their various companies. To emphasize this relationship, the film showed scenes of Bush and the Saudi while playing the song Shiny Happy People by REM in the background to convince viewers how close they are. Saudi Arabia just happened to be where Bin Laden and his very wealthy family are from. The movie also states The Saudis own 7 percent of U.S. wealth and if they were to take out all of their money invested in America, U.S. economy could collapse. Telling information like this, although one-sided, does give the appearance that Moore is well informed and knowledgeable about this subject. Thus, the last argument is from source, which is presenting the film as a reliable source of information. Moore may be most adept in this argument because, in some cases, his opinion are confirmed by the very person he is saying them against. For instance, when Moore states that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, he reinforces this statement by showing Bush and members of his party saying, pre- 9/11, that Saddam has no weapons of mass destruction. Moore also used news clips from channels like CNN and FOX networks that are considered trustworthy and credible. He also supports his opinion by interviewing people in prominent positions like congressmen. Moore is also able to present himself as a believable and educated person, even if this may not be true. As the narrator, he can talk in first person making the narration more personal. Moores voice, as well as its tone, changes in relation to the topic at hand. If he is talking about soldiers, their families, or the Iraq i people his voice is filled with compassion. When talking about Bush and his friends his tone of voice is sometimes indifferent as if he were merely presenting facts, but at other times, depending on the subject, his tone would become sarcastic. Moore also proves himself to be researched and visionary when he talks about Bushs National Guard record. Moore he requested a copy of this document, which proves another connection with the Bin Ladens, in 2000 and then one in 2004, when controversy about it surfaced. In the 2004 version a name was blacked out, which was the evidence in this link between Bush and Bin Laden. This name was not marked out in the 2000 one, however. Moore is able to show that he was suspicious of Bush long before other people were. This documentary in its rhetorical form can be considered a piece of propaganda but regardless of if you agree with the opinions it expresses or believe the message trying to be conveyed, it is hard to ignore because it makes such strong accusations. Fahrenheit 9/11 is a commentary on current American life and regardless of its truth, it does send a powerful and controversial message that raises questions and does deserve discussion. This ultimately may have been Moores point.
